History
Lionel Bacon

Lionel's two great interests were alpine plants and morris dancing, and he excelled at both, being, at various times, the President of the Alpine Garden Society and Squire of the Morris Ring.

He was a founder of Winchester Morris Men in 1953, and was a member of the Cambridge Morris Men (having been admitted in 1932), the Travelling Morrice, London Pride Morris Men and the Whitchurch Morris Men

He is chiefly remembered in the morris world for his compilation of "A Handbook of Morris Dances" which he described as an aide memoire, rather than a morris dancing primer.

The book is published by the Morris Ring, and is available from Steve Adamson, the Morris Ring’s Treasurer +44 (0)1274 773830, at £13.50 plus postage and packing.

An article on Lionel Bacon, by Harry Stevenson of the Winchester Morris Men, appears in print in "The Morris Dancer" (February 2000, Vol. 3, No. 7), edited by Eddie Dunmore on behalf of the Morris Ring

Part of the article is also published at The Morris Dancer website

An obituary of Lionel, by Walter Abson, past Bagman of the Morris Ring, appears in the Folk Music Journal 1995 Volume 7 Number 1 at pp 128 -129. ISSN 0531-9684.
